Stamp Collecting when Travelling

Stamp Collecting when Travelling

Stamp collecting refers to the act of collecting stamps and stamp-related paraphernalia.  Stamp collecting is considered to be one of the oldest yet still popular indoor hobbies in the world.  While you may think that stamp collecting is something that is very outdated in this digital age, well, think again – it is estimated that around 25 million people enjoy this stamp collecting hobby in the United States alone, while there are about 60 million people who collect stamps worldwide!  If you are thinking of joining in on this endeavor of stamp collecting, then you will definitely enjoy it as much as the others do.  But how can you acquire such stamps?  You can ask some friends or family if they have stamps they would like to give to you, you can buy online, or you can go and buy them yourself when you travel.

Stamps as souvenirs

Travelling anywhere – within your own country or abroad – is a great way for unwinding and it gives us the opportunity to appreciate the idea of being alive and free to go anywhere we want.  A lot of travelers, of course, tend to buy souvenirs or items that signify the fact that they have already traveled to that specific area.  For instance, if you are into stamp collecting and part of your travels is to get at least one stamp per country, then you are in for a totally wonderful experience.  Even if such souvenirs get dusty on the shelves, there are people who regard them as priceless memorabilia of their previous journeys.  All of us have our own special way of reminiscing the past; however, the best feeling for me is this: the very moment you are holding that certain souvenir in your hand and it reminds you where you have already been to – and this for me is stamp collecting.

Stamp Collecting

Different types of stamps good for stamp collecting while traveling. These are real postage stamps and souvenirs at the same time.

Take for example those who do some stamp collecting, they are most likely the ones who would buy stamps as their preferred souvenirs, and through their stamp collecting hobby, they bring home wonderful memories that can be manifested via the stamps they have bought.  Also, the best part about stamp collecting when travelling to different places is that you (or your next generation) can benefit through them should you decide to sell or auction them off someday.

Who collect stamps?

Are you someone who likes to collect stamps?  When people learn that a person’s hobby is stamp collecting, they imagine someone who is already a grandfather, a war veteran, or maybe an extremely rich elderly woman.  This is not entirely true. Stamp Collecting is practiced by all ages. In my experience Stamp Collecting is practiced from young kids up to the elderly age. If you are a traveler, you may possibly consider doing some stamp collecting yourself because stamp collecting is becoming a travel trend these days.

As much as possible, I try to find stamps from all the countries that I visit.  Stamp collecting may be merely considered a hobby with an easygoing nature, but if you are really going to personally acquire stamps during your travels abroad, it can prove to be quite a challenge, especially if you do not speak that country’s native language (or they don’t know how to speak in English) and you have no idea where and how to acquire the stamps you are looking for.  For me, bringing home a stamp from another country is one great marker of my travels, and it makes me happy to be able to see those stamps that help me remember where I have been, and how and where I have acquired them. There is more story to it than I get from a photograph.

Find stamps from the visited countries

As you can see from my blog, I have traveled to many areas, especially in Asia.  Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines are some of the areas I have already visited, and I really enjoyed solo traveling in these countries.  Typically, the easiest way to get new stamps to add to your stamp collecting quest when in a foreign country is, of course, to visit the local post office.

It is never too late for you to try out stamp collecting.  Even if you have never collected stamps before, you will surely find out that it actually is a lot of fun.  You get to learn the history, politics, religion, everyday life, and geography of different countries through stamp collecting.

Sure, buying stamps online can have its perks, but it is not without problems.  If you are going to travel to that certain country anyways, why not make it one of your goals to get some new stamps to add to your collection?  While many of those who do some stamp collecting wanted to get different types of stamps, I only prefer to postage stamps as it is the easiest type of stamp to get for a backpacker like me. I just find a local post office and viola, new stamps to add to my stamp collection! Postage stamps are for me the “real stamps”. All others have no interest.

Oh yeah, don’t fret just in case you forgot (or you weren’t able) to do some stamp collecting during your travels.  If you happen to have friends living abroad, you can simply ask them to send you some stamps from their country for your stamp collecting purposes.

Try it yourself

The next time you travel to another country, why not challenge yourself and start doing some stamp collecting on the side? Stamp collecting is indeed a great way to exercise your independence abroad, especially if you are a backpack traveler like me.  Who knows, you might be able to get into that stamp collecting habit every time you are off exploring the world.

If you want to know how much your stamps are worth or maybe find inspiration on what stamps to look for in the countries before you go you can use this online stamp collecting catalogue to do so.

No matter what your age is, your gender, your ethnicity, and differences with other people, stamp collecting can truly be enjoyed by everyone!
