The backpacking lifestyle one step up

What to do in Cambodia in 10 days.

This is the guide telling you what to do and about the things to see in Cambodia in 10-12 days. Cambodia is the perfect place to visit if you have planned a trip around South East Asia.  If you plan to visit both Thailand and Vietnam it would be a real pity not to visit Cambodia at the same time. I would say so especially because Cambodia offers maybe the best tourist attraction in all of South East Asia.

I went to Cambodia and had a great time. I really loved it and I hope to go back sometime. If you have 10-12 days to visit Cambodia I would recommend doing only the main attractions. An itinerary could look like this.

Day 1-4:  Siem Reap to Visit that amazing ruins of Angkor

Day 5-6:  Phnom Penh to see the capital and the Killing Fields

Day 7-10: Sihanoukville for some chilling and relaxing beach life

Siem Reap to see Angkor

In Siem Reap the main attraction is Angkor but Siem Reap is also nice on its own. In Siem Reap you can have a nice time relaxing not doing much for a few days as well if you have the time to do it. There is also an access point to the Tonle Sap Lake from Siem Reap.

Most people visiting Siem Reap go here to see the ruins after the Khmer Empire. Angkor is a whole area and the most famous temple is named Angkor Wat. There are many more ruins than this one and I can highly recommend you to visit this place. Not visiting Angkor when you are near would be a real pity.

Tonle Sap

Tonle Sap is another thing to visit while being in Siem Reap. My personal opinion is that it is not a main thing and if you really have to hurry onwards you won’t miss out from not going there. However if you do go there you will have a nice boat ride on the lake and see some floating villages.

I stayed in a hotel in Siem Reap called Mekong Angkor Palace. I can highly recommend this place.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. The city has 1.5 million inhabitants. The Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot were emptying the city  of occupants during those horrible times of Pol Pots dictatorship. Today Phnom Penh is a busy city with lots of traffic and plenty hotels. Personally I think Phnom Penh has some terrifying attractions to witness the period of Pol Pot and those are worth seeing. Otherwise I believe 2 days is enough because Siem Reap and Sihanoukville are better for relaxation.

Where to stay

I would recommend you to stay at the Riverfront. The standard is lower and prices are higher in Phnom Penh compared to Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. So if you plan to relax and unwind it will be much nicer to do in one of those places.

Sihanoukville is where you find the best beaches in Cambodia. This is also where you find the Cambodian version of full moon parties as you have seen them in Thailand.

There are many beaches around Sihanoukville. No matter the different names I would only recommend you to stay at Serendipity Beach or Occheutal Beach. Those beaches are next to each other and in reality so small that for the human eye they ought to be just one beach having a rocky part and a sandy part. A few hundred meters walk and the rocky part is gone so unless you are really critical the whole beach is nice. Serendipity does have more restaurants and more hotels around while the Occheutal Beach is a bit less developed but has nicer sand.

This is the perfect place to just relax and unwind. In the evening you can eat some lovely seafood or other BBQ directly on the beach and sip cocktails. Usually one of the beach bars arrange a beach party which can be a lot of fun too.

Where to stay

Deciding where to stay you can just show up and ask for prices. They are rarely fully booked.

In order to not waste time looking for accommodation you can also book online. The prices are pretty much the same.

I stayed in Golden Sands Hotel and paid 30 USD per night.
