Why go to Vietnam.

Why go to Vietnam

Why I went to Vietnam can be explained by two reasons. One reason being I wanted to try something new. I had already visited other countries in South East Asia like Thailand and Philippines. I thought Vietnam was different since it was communist country and still under heavy influence by China. Also Vietnam has been a French colony which Thailand and Philippines has not. For these reasons I was expecting Vietnam to be totally different.

Another more practical reason was that I had already decided to travel to Cambodia to see the temples of Angkor and Vietnam was  neighbor country to Cambodia. So my route started in Thailand going through Cambodia towards South Vietnam. This was a very convenient route. I had booked 2 flight tickets from home for the routes South to Central Vietnam and from Central Vietnam to North Vietnam. If you decide to go to Vietnam I would recommend you to do the same to avoid the hassle of doing it on site.

Now that I have been to Vietnam I can also answer why I think you should go. If you like the following Vietnam is a perfect country for you

  • Combination of big cities, culture, nature, mountains and nice beaches.
  • Good food and an opportunity to experience the extreme difference in foods between North and South Vietnam.
  • A friendly well-coming people.
  • Fair prices and still much lower compared to for instance Thailand.
  • Plenty of opportunities to go on day tours for between 10-40 USD per day depending on the type of tour.
  • Getting close to some historic places that you have watched plenty of movies of.
  • Easy infrastructure. It is not a hassle to get around.

Getting from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

I started my tour to Vietnam from Phnom Penh in Cambodia. I went to the bus station and easily found a bus. The only thing they were fuzzy about was checking if I had a visa to enter Vietnam. I did not have a visa and I was very nervous if they would not let me on board the bus. The reason I did not have a visa was that I had read on the web page for the Danish foreign ministry that Danish nationals would get a 14 days visa upon arrival when entering Vietnam. Luckily the bus driver also knew this so my nervousness was unnecessary and I could relax. When we arrived at the border the processing went fast and smooth. They collected all passports in the bus and called out our names with a 14 days visa given. The journey across the Mekong delta was beautiful. I noticed so many scenes I would like to take pictures of.

The journey from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City took about 4 hours. The bus stopped at the main street in Saigon District 3 which is the main backpacker area. Here you find plenty of good cheap hotel rooms and guesthouses.
