The backpacking lifestyle one step up

What to do in Vietnam

Things to do in Vietnam.

What to do in Vietnam is maybe the most crucial question to ask your self when you have decided to visit Vietnam. Finding things to do in Vietnam is easy. The hard part is deciding what you do not want to do if you have limited time. I made my choices based on what seemed logic and practical since I had a limited amount of time. So I did not take those strays away from my main route if I had to track back the same way that I came from. So I entered in the South and moved towards North and flew out from Hanoi in North Vietnam.

Top 10 best tourist attractions and places in Vietnam

My top 10 list for the best tourist attractions and places to go to in Vietnam looks like this.  Please note I have not put them in order so number one is my first priority. The order of the list is the same order as I visited the tourist attractions. So number one is where I went first and number 8 is where I went last. Number 9 and 10 I can sadly say I have to skip and make a mental note to do them next time. You can always click on each link for more information.

#1 Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Ho Chi Minh city Saigon District 3

My guesthouse hotel street in HCMC district 3

Ho Chi Minh City formerly known as Saigon is the number one place in the world I have ever seen so many motor cycles. It is just crazy and if you go there you will know what I mean. The city is a bit chaotic at first glimpse and then you adapt and probably start to appreciate it.

# 2 Mekong Delta Tour

Mekong Delta is the area where the majestic Mekong river running through Myanmar, China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam ends. Here you can find hundreds or maybe thousands of islands divided by small streams and rivers. To go here and see how the locals live and what they produce is a must do.

# 3 Cu Chi Tunnels

The number one most well-known event in Vietnamese history is probably the Vietnam war where the all-might USA was defeated as maybe the only time ever in history. To big frustration the Vietnamese rebels where able to magically enter the enemy line and disappear again. Visit Cu Chi Tunnels to see how.

# 4 Hoi An Old Ancient Town

Imagine an old town with no traffic and a place where you can literally walk in the middle of the street and not being run over. Old houses and a quiet charming atmosphere. The quality of food is perfect and maybe the best of all of Vietnam. This is Hoi An Old Town.

Hoi An

# 5 Around Hoi An – Cua Dai Beach & China Beach

A 100 meter wide beach. Free sunbeds as long as you buy a drink or something. The sand is clear and paradise like. The food served is well-prepared and there is a family like atmosphere. Here you can easily spend 4-5 days and shortly after you leave you would wish you could go back.

Hue Citadel Forbidden City

# 6 Hué Vietnams old political capital

There was a time when Hue was a Vietnamese capital. 13 emperors managed to rule the country. Not all evenly successful. You can take a journey on the Perfume River and explore the history of the 13 previous rulers of the country. Visit their royal tombs. This is just one thing you can do here. There is much more to do.

# 7 Hanoi city Vietnam

Hanoi up in the North is also in many ways bipolar to Ho Chi Minh City down in the North. The 2 cities are so different that it would be a shame not to visit both of them. Where HCMC is bustling chaotic Hanoi is more quiet and laid back.

For more information about Hanoi.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay outside Hanoi

# 8 Halong Bay

Halong Bay being maybe the number 1 tourist attraction in Vietnam. Here you will be able to take hundreds of pictures and find scenic views that will amaze you. Located in short distance to Hanoi this is a must see.

For more information about Halong Bay

Please note.

I put a divider between #1-8 and #9-10 because these two are examples of the prioritization I had to make when I should do my 8 other places in 14 days. I really wanted to go to Da Lat and Sapa but I simply did not have enough time. But I still want to mention them because if you travel to Vietnam and have 6-7 more days than I did I really would recommend you go there. Based on the stories I have heard and pictures I have seen it should be absolutely worth it.

# 9 DaLat

Dalat located in the mountains not so far from HCMC. This place is organized, clean and having an all-year-round pleasant climate. Dalat shows sign of being for the French upper class when Vietnam was a French colony.

For more information about Dalat.

# 10 Sapa

Beautiful rice terraces. A work of art where you wonder how they can have build these and how many years it must have taken. A proof that humans can find a way to grow food in almost any place no matter what it takes.

For more information about Sapa.

South – Central – North Vietnam

Here you will find three post links giving you more information about South, North and Central Vietnam. Basically they are the same as the links in the Top 10 above.  Just meant as a service so if you have read these 3 posts you have seen it all 🙂

South Vietnam talking about Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Also Dalat.

Central Vietnam talking about Hoi An, Hue and Around Hoi An

North Vietnam talking about Hanoi and Halong Bay
