The backpacking lifestyle one step up

Where to go backpacking? How to choose holiday destination?

What is the best backpacker place for me to go?

Choosing between Asia, Australia, USA, Europe, South America……..

This question is not really an easy one. It’s hard to decide where to go among such a vast amount of opportunities. The whole world is reachable today within a reasonable budget. So the challenge is not to find a place to go but to set limitations on where not to go. Even so when you have picked your destination is it a challenge to choose what to see and what not to see.

Things to consider before you choose

Before you decide were you want to go do you need a small introduction to the whole world. This is of course not possible in a short article like this one. The purpose of this article is to open your eyes to some differences and things you need to decide upon within each area of the world. For instance when you select a destination you should have made up your mind what features you want you destination to have.  Below I have made a small list of things you should consider before you go. I am sure when you read it you might have other things yourself to add to it.
  • Do you want beaches?
  • Do you want nature? And If yes what kind? (Mountains, forests, volcanoes, national parks, paradise islands….)
  • Do you want a certain travel style? (bicycling, hiking, homestay, hassle free movement from A to B…..)
  • Do you want cheap expenses? Some countries are much cheaper than others.
  • Do you want to travel by air or overland? Not all countries have a good infrastructure.
  • Do you want to drive your own car? (remember to find out if your drivers license is valid)
  • Do you want cultural experiences?
  • Do you want to party where you are?
  • Do you want big cities or smaller cities?

Each region of the world has different things to offer. So you should make sure there is a match between your wishes above and where you choose to travel to. If for instance you say you want beaches, party, cheap prices and prefer islands then I might think it sounds like Asia would be a good place for you to visit. On the other hand if you say nature, national parks, and adventures combined with big cities and hassle free movement I might think you would probably have a better holiday in North America. Read below more about each continent.

Europe has many exiting experiences to offer a luxury backpacker. It has history, culture, party, beaches, nature and beautiful big and small cities. Its not the same everywhere so within Europe you would need to investigate more and decide exactly what you like. For a Luxury backpacker the best value would still be by train or budget airlines. It would be expensive to get away from the route of these transportations since other transportation like taxi is very expensive in most countries.

Europe offer major fascinating cities full of history and culture. Each city has its own monuments like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Colosseum in Rome. For nature lovers there is the mountains in the Alpes or the fiords of Norway. Also in south Europe you will find beaches with nice hot weather and all night long parties.

The disadvantage of Europe is that travelling around is quite expensive in comparison to other places and the prices are quite high for hotels and food. This is especially true for Western Europe but even Eastern Europe is starting to show higher prices.

South East Asia

Asia is very big and its not the scope here to talk about the developed countries like Japan and South Korea. Instead we focus only on South East Asia which includes countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, Philippines, and Singapore.

To get around in this part of Asia is easy. You can choose all from budget airlines, trains, busses, vans, taxies, motor bikes etc. It is all quite inexpensive so you can almost go where you want. In Many countries you can hire a private driver for a whole day for a reasonable price. Taking a taxi is usually also not expensive. For this reason Asia offer you a degree of freedom you hardly find anywhere else in the world.

Asia has gigantic cities like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore among others. Each of them has its own uniqueness to offer so you can easily visit them all and have a new feeling with each one. For instance when Manila has its chaos Singapore on the complete other end of the scale is one of the most organized places in the world.

Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world you will find in Asia. Many of these beaches are either made close to nature style or on the other end totally party style. So make sure before you go which one suits your wishes and needs. There is also a variety of nature that is exotic and romantic.

The region is relatively inexpensive and you will get far with your money. So a luxury backpacker can easily find a hotel that meets the criteria’s on standard for a reasonable price. Also eating and drinking out is good value for money in most places.

The limitation goes to if you want to be on a road trip. This region do not suit really well with the idea of renting a car and drive around.

North America

North America is perfect for renting a car and tour around on your own and just explore the world. Gas is cheap and rental prices are low as well. On top of this the variety in nature is enormous.

North America offers some of the most attractive cities in the world. For instance I could mention New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto and many more. Yeah I even forgot Las Vegas in that first list. But don’t forget on top of these nice cities you also find some very extreme and impressing nature. So while you drive your rental car between the cities you will pass some very beautiful and interesting sights.

On the East coast you can drive up to Niagara Falls from New York. From the West coast the nature is even more extreme with sights like Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains and much more. There are numerous national parks that are worth a visit and the best part is that even driving between them is exiting.

North America offers a high standard that easily meets the typical requirement of a luxury backpacker. Prices are a bit higher compared to the cheapest places you can find but in my experience most people who travel around North America feel the get a good value for money.

However if you consider travelling on your own as a solo traveller potentially you might feel a bit stranded on your own if you are going to rent a car. In this case it might be better to stick to the public transportation options and see if you meet some people on busses and trains.

South America

South America with its Hispanic roots and relaxed lifestyle is very adventurous.  You will find a variety of nature as well as impressive cities. Take a trip for 5 days into the jungle of Amazonas where you just cruise up river lying in a hammock for 5 days looking at the scenery and feel the massiveness and scariness of the Amazonas. Or take a walk in the City of Rio in Brazil and feel the unique atmosphere this city has to offer. Not to forget the Copacabana Beach – one of the most famous in the world..

You can travel around South America by airplanes or busses. We would not recommend renting your own car here. Transportation from one destination to another is easy in most places though you might need some patience once in a while. It might not go as fast as you are used to.

South America has nature, mountains, culture, beaches, cities and much more.  Take a look into countries like Brazil, Argentina, Chile and more to see how different it is from North America. There is a charming atmosphere here and a warm hearted temper you do not find anywhere else.

The price level is higher than in Asia but still lower than in Europe or North America. You should get value for your money here.

One thing you should notice though. When going out in the evening make a security assessment with your hotel personnel and also consult your gut feeling. Beware of the risk of crime. Better to take a taxi home than to walk home on a dark night.

Australia / New Zealand

Just like in North America this is also a perfect place to travel around by your own car or caravan. I would almost say there is no other way. Luckily there is but if you do have a drivers license and can make it fit try organise your own transportation. Our partners are both credible and trustworthy. Click here if you want to know more about renting a car.

In Australia and New Zealand you will find an amazing nature. From large empty deserts to beautiful mountain sceneries snow covered and perfect for skiing.  You will see spectacular volcanoes and glaciers as well as penguins coming to shore at night. The variety of nature is breath taking. Even though there are fascinating cities this travel destination is all about nature, nature, nature.

A piece of advise on how to allocate your time between Australia and New Zealand. Many underestimate New Zealand and later regret and wish they had allocated more time. If you plan to go for instance 3 months you should consider giving more time than only 2 weeks for New Zealand. I would recommend a month.

Lonely Planet

If you wish to read more information about each of the possible travel destinations for you I recommend you to find the relevant Lonely Planet books. Often they have buy 3 – pay for 2 promotion.
